What is an EPD?
A standards-based, third-party verified document that reports the environmental impacts of a product across its life cycle.
An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a Type III environmental declaration under ISO 14025. It uses Life Cycle Assessment (ISO 14040 / 14044) to quantify a product's environmental performance — global warming potential, energy and water use, resource depletion and more — and reports them in a standardised format.
What does an EPD contain?
- • Identification of the product, manufacturer and applicable PCR.
- • System boundaries and functional / declared unit.
- • Quantified environmental indicators per life-cycle module.
- • Data quality and methodology statement.
- • Independent verifier's declaration.
Why it matters
EPDs make low-carbon procurement possible. They turn LCA data into a transparent label that buyers, architects, governments and green-building rating systems can use to choose better products.
